I recently had a much needed hip replacement and it was completed at the Watervliet Hospital. Dr. Schaffer’s office has always been very informative as to what the surgery would involve and also what the expectations were after. At no time did I feel any question I had was a bother and that they were only a phone call away. Post-surgery visits were very focused on your needs. The short stay at the hospital is very calming and the staff is wonderful. Your PT and OT needs are met with detail and all the tools you need to come home with are great. Often, when you need surgery you feel anxious. Knowing you have a great doctor and staff there to support you, helps take some of the worries away.

Six months ago, I was facing major surgery. A Total Knee Replacement. As an active 49 years young woman, who still rides horses every day, and has always enjoyed a very physical career in the veterinary field, this was extremely scary. Would I feel better or worse after this was all said and done? Would I still be able to get on and off of my huge 17.3 hand Hunter Under Saddle horse? Would I need to be even more cautious in the activities that I was at that point? There were so many questions in my mind. I had always heard that knee replacement surgeries ‘were for old people, to be able to move from one lounge chair to another’. After tearing my meniscus and during the repair of that, Dr. Schaefer took pictures of my knee, which showed us exactly what we were dealing with. A knee that unfortunately, due to arthritic changes and several injuries, looked 30 years older than it was. I decided to get this major surgery, at this point in my life, for quality of life. I had and have the utmost faith and respect in Dr. Schaffer, Tracy and his entire staff. The surgery, hospital stay, recovery, physical training and aftermath have all gone off without a hitch. Now, six months post op, I am already enjoying a stronger knee than I have felt in decades. I would do it all again, and would not choose anyone other than Dr. Robert Schaeffr. I cannot sing his praises loud enough!

I have known Dr. Schaefer for over 15 yrs. About 3 years ago I was referred to him again by my primary care physician. I have been living with Rheumatoid Arthritis and it had taken its toll on my knees. Dr. Schaefer knew it was time for me to have my first knee replacement from the x-rays and from looking at it physically. The Doctors and Nurses at Orthopedic Associates of Kalamazoo made each visit before and after the knee replacement” Awesome. “One thing that stood out the most during my visit with doctor Schaefer was when he asked me ” What quality of life do you have with your knee like that.” I told him none. I explained to him what I don’t do anymore because of the way it looked, how painful it was to walk on it and how it made me feel when people would stair when I walked.
